I travel by air every couple of months, and always think about a single, burning question: What makes for a great airplane movie? Not movies about being on planes. “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” the latest offering from the director Guy Ritchie, is a perfect airplane movie. But you’ve got to watch something, and for that, we have movies like this one. Ritchie didn’t always make airplane movies.

His pledge to direct Justice Department investigations is backed by allies who view his second term as driven by a maximalist theory of a president’s authority. But it also underscores why a second Trump term would be dramatically different. Some in Washington saw them as guardrails for a White House intent on fracturing not one, but all three branches of government. Yet Trump, should he secure a second term, would enter the White House with his most powerful Republican critics on Capitol Hill almost all gone. That would be a position that isn’t backed by his second term policy plans, or his private impulses during his first term in office – or, for that matter, in the decades prior.

Microplastics Are a Big Problem, a New Film Warns

It’s been more than five decades since Dustin Hoffman’s character in “The Graduate” was offered a kernel of wisdom about the path to prosperity. “Plastics,” he’s told by Mr. McGuire, the starched corporate executive who offers the advice. “There’s a great future in plastics.”Plastics have indeed been a game changer for humanity, and the enormous range of cheap, durable plastic goods, from food containers and PVC pipes to polyester clothing and single-use medical products, have inarguably improved life. The problem, as nearly everyone knows, is that plastics are forever and very little of it has been recycled. The U.N. has estimated that most of the 400 million metric tons churned out annually — a doubling of production since 2000 — will remain on Earth in some form as they are broken down into teeny specks by sunlight, wind and the sea.

We got a preview of this unprecedented criminal trial mixed with a presidential campaign on Thursday at a key hearing in the New York criminal case. Claiming violent crime in cites, especially those run by Democrats, is one of Trump’s favorite talking points. The idea that violent crime is at an “all-time high” is completely untrue, as CNN’s Daniel Dale wrote last October. But the judge in Manhattan has filled Trump’s calendar at the end of March, when that federal trial could theoretically have taken place. But as The New York Times notes, despite the rising number of migrants in the city, violent crime has dropped.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man who leaped over a judicial bench and attacked a Nevada judge during a sentencing hearing in Las Vegas last month that was captured in a courtroom video that went viral has now been indicted for attempted murder. A grand jury returned the nine-count indictment against Deobra Redden, 30, in Las Vegas on Thursday. Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus was about to deliver Redden’s sentence in an attempted battery case on Jan. 3 when he lunged over the bench at her. A week later Judge Holthus sentenced him to up to four years in prison for the battery charge he had pleaded guilty to in November. In a culture that focuses so intensely on success, it’s easy to feel like a failure. But according to the organizational psychologist Adam Grant, that might be because we’re thinking about achievement all wrong. Many people assume that accomplishments are tied closely to innate ability, so they give up on pursuits they find challenging. That’s a mistake, Dr. Grant writes in his new book, “Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things.”Dr. Grant shares anecdotes about people who accomplished the extraordinary despite showing little aptitude at first — including himself. Interwoven with the stories he shares, Dr. Grant analyzes the paths and strategies that led to each success and discusses relevant insights from the research literature — his home turf.

Rep. Jim Jordan was again decisively defeated in his bid to become speaker on Friday, marking his third failed ballot this week and by the largest margin yet as his support continues to erode. Yet it remained unclear whether the divisive lawmaker would yield in his strong-armed bid for leadership amid a growing urgency for House Republicans to resolve the crisis they created. Twenty-five House Republicans voted against the Ohio Republican, growing by three votes since Wednesday and two in the first vote a day prior, as things are trending in the wrong direction for Jordan. Unlike McCarthy, Jordan has the backing of most House conservatives. Still, Jordan faces opposition from a number of sides – from moderates, from appropriators and from McCarthy and Majority Leader Steve Scalise allies, among others.

The bulk of the Trump PAC money went to law firms that have defended Trump against a series of criminal charges or in civil lawsuits. “Well, if the little fish’s lawyer is being paid by the big fish that’s less likely to happen potentially.”The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. That money is earmarked for political and campaign activities, not for legal expenses, according to the campaign. To help pay the legal fees, Trump’s political operation has also moved millions from his super PAC, MAGA Inc. Those concerns are amplified in court records filed by Smith’s team in the Mar-a-Lago case.

Lawmakers take to the House floor Tuesday to try to resolve their ongoing speaker standoff that has left the chamber without a leader for two weeks since Kevin McCarthy’s ouster. House Republicans nominated Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio for the post after their initial nominee bowed out of the race amid deep divisions within the conference. But the House Judiciary Committee chairman forged ahead anyway, as lawmakers grew impatient about the stalemate. Typically, some lawmakers pledge their vote in the first round as a good-faith show of support to their party’s speaker nominee. But it’s not clear that those votes will remain in place if the nominee does not prevail on an initial ballot.

But Jordan, like Scalise and McCarthy before him, faces an uphill battle to unify the conference. With a razor-thin GOP majority in the House, he’ll need the support of nearly every Republican to become speaker. Lawmakers instead were expected to head home for the weekend before returning for a speaker vote early next week. With Trump’s endorsement, some House Republicans coalesced around Jordan, while others touted him as a change to the status quo. Still, among many moderates, a Jordan speakership is unthinkable.
